Sunday Worship

Philip JonesPhilip Jones was our preacher on Trinity Sunday.

In his sermon he considered a passage from the 55th chapter of Isaiah where the prophet speaks about the nature of God, and Philip reflected on how his own understandings of God have been nurtured by the symbols, insights and experiences of the Christian tradition.

You can read the text of Philip's sermon here, and you can hear the audio version of it on the Audio and Video page of our website here - just scroll down to the Sermons section of the page.

Our sincere thanks also go to:
  • Jenny-Anne, Susan, Margaret and Ian who assisted with various parts of the service;
  • our singers and musicians for their dedicated ministry of music in the church;
  • and the team of helpers who prepare the church for worship, provide us with refreshments, manage the distributions from our foodbank, and clear things away at the end of the day.

In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

Refugee Week for 2017 runs from 19th to 25th June and full details of events nationwide are available on the Refugee Week website here.

As a way of acknowledging the many members and friends of our congregation who have sought, and are still seeking, asylum and refuge in the UK, we invite all those members and friends, past and present, to join us on Sunday 25th June, at 4.30pm as usual, for a special service on the theme of asylum, refuge and sanctuary.

Cyprain - still in detention at time of writing

Cyprain Buh TahMany of you will be aware, as a result of the campaigning and social media messages relating to Cyprain Buh Tah, that our friend remains in detention and continues to be at risk of deportation.

The full story of his case is given on his petition page which is still live here and for which we welcome your support.

Your continuing prayers are asked for Cyprain's release from detention and a just outcome to his asylum case. He has sent messages of thanks via our congregation to everyone who has supported him so far with their prayers and all who have worked with his lawyer to make a difference in his case.

If you wish to send personal messages of support, the easiest way is to send a text message to his phone - 07405 585508. Please don't expect a reply as his priority is probably to save his phone credit for essential calls to his lawyer and campaign team.

Songs this Week

Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty is a very popular choice for Trinity Sunday dealing, as it does, with eternal unchanging truth about God’s own self. The hymn is a paraphrase of Revelation 4 where the seer catches a vision of God enthroned in heavenly glory, surrounded by the twenty-four elders with their golden crowns and the four living creatures singing endlessly “holy, holy, holy”. We cannot understand the mystery of the Trinity, but we can understand that God is “merciful and mighty”, that he is “perfect in power, in love, and purity”. Along with “all thy works” we too praise God’s name.

Immortal, invisible, God only wise is a hymn by Scottish minister Walter Chalmers Smith which first appeared in print in 1867. The scriptural foundation for verse one is 1 Timothy 1:17: "Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." Subsequent verses focus on God dwelling in inaccessible light, giving life to all, while dispensing justice like mountains high-soaring above clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. We sing the words to the stirring Welsh tune 'Saint Denio'.

Many are the lightbeams from the one light is an adaptation by Anders Frostenson of words by Cyprian of Carthage dating from the 3rd century. Set to the haunting tune 'Lightbeams' by Olle Widestrand, the words remind us that Jesus is the source of our light, our gifts, our love, our servant spirit, and that we are ultimately members of one body in Christ.

O Lord my God (How great thou art) dates from 1885 when Carl G. Boberg wrote the words only of a poem entitled "O Store Gud". Several years later, Boberg attended a meeting and was surprised to hear his poem being sung to the tune of an old Swedish melody. In the early 1920s English missionaries, Stuart K. Hine and his wife, ministered in Poland. It was there they learned the Russian version of Boberg’s poem "O Store Gud" coupled with the original Swedish melody. Later, Hine wrote original English words and made his own arrangement of the Swedish melody, which became popular and is now known as the hymn, "How Great Thou Art".

Foodbank

Many thanks for your regular and generous donations to the foodbank. You make a real difference to people's lives - some will have a meal on their table today solely because of your gifts!

We provide a bag of food and other basic essentials to a number of people each week which supplements either the meagre allowance they are given by the state or (for many) the Red Cross food parcels they receive for a limited period. We know that some people rely just on the food we provide as they are not entitled to either help from the state or the Red Cross.

As a general rule, we always need long-life foodstuffs such as
  • rice,
  • pasta,
  • pasta sauces,
  • tinned vegetables (peas, carrots, baked beans, kidney beans, potatoes, chopped or plum tomatoes),
  • canned fruit,
  • jams and preserves,
  • tea, coffee, sugar,
  • and any other long-life basic larder items such as herbs, spices and condiments
Personal toiletry items (ideally 'family' brands for use by both men and women) - such as shower gel, shampoo, soap and deodorant - are also very welcome.
